pppoe throughput performance

Hello,
I have a Linux server running accel-ppp with ~1200 users connected; I have noticed that the throughput achieved on the pppoe link
is only a little bit more than half of that on a direct connection.
In the example below both machines are SNAT-ed and the same speedtest server is used.
The Linux server running accel-ppp has a dual-port 10G Broadcom NIC and the tests were made using a Windows machine connected to an
1 Gbps port of a switch having a 10G uplink with the server.
Are there any additional settings which can be fine tuned to improve the performance?
